The Afghan government has collapsed. After two decades of war with American-led forces, the Taliban’s conquest of the country is all but complete.

Well, that’s done.

“One more year, or five more years, of U.S. military presence would not have made a difference if the Afghan military cannot or will not hold its own country,” Mr. Biden said in a statement Saturday. “And an endless American presence in the middle of another country’s civil conflict was not acceptable to me.”

And it hasn’t been acceptable to millons of Americans for quite a long time — not counting the hundreds (thousands!) of parents and loved ones of military and support personnel shipped home from there in boxes. To them — many of them, anyway — the whole exercise has been a heart-wrenching disaster.
